We all hear how medical costs are rising.  It only makes sense that the cost of prescription drugs would follow with that.

Generic drugs are less expensive and they are equivalent to brand name drugs in terms of safety, effectiveness, quality control, packaging, and usually appearance.  It is also the same in dosage and intended use.

When a new drug is produced, it has a patent of 12 to 15 years.  After this time, a generic if the drug can be produced.

Producers of generic pharmaceuticals have identical manufacturing standards as producers of brand-name pharmaceuticals.  In fact, the FDA requires generic drugs to have the same quality, strength, purity, and stability as they brand-name counterparts.

If there is ever a question, you can ask your prescribing doctor if he or she has a problem with a generic version of a drug.  Buying generic prescriptions is almost certainly going to save you money at the pharmacy.
