Controlling Spending
Sometimes, no matter how hard someone tries, they simply cannot control their spending. Why is this seemingly easy thing to do so hard for some people? There are many arguments why people cannot control spending ranging from self discipline to low self esteem. However, there are some basic ideas that should not be overlooked regardless of why you think you may not be able to control your spending. Call it what you will, but controlling anything starts with a certain state of mind.
1 .Identify what areas you overspend on and focus on that. Review your spending habits and try and determine what areas are problem areas. Perhaps you love shoes, and realize you are buying new shoes every week. Maybe you cannot find one problem area, but rather many. However, at least you tried to identify where it was. In many ways this can be cause you to consciously thing about purchases in this area and thus help control them.
2. Pay yourself first. Sometimes people will see money in their account and if it is there, they have to spend it. If this is the case, move money to another account as soon as you receive your paycheck. Preferably make it automatic and into an account where makes it difficult to tap into. Perhaps your employer would deposit some fixed amount from your check into a money market account at a different institution than your checking account - this way you cannot simply log onto your internet banking account and transfer funds back into your checking account.
3. Avoid stores where you know you have a problem. For example, if you go to the local mall every Saturday and you cannot go without making a purchase, then limit the amount of times you are going to the mall. Find something else to do on a Saturday, such as go to a movie to take up your time.
4. We really are impulse buyers in the United States. How many times when you walk into Wal-Mart, do you see something on the end of an aisle or in a special display that you end up buying it? There is a reason for that and it is caused strategic marketing. Companies spend big bucks to find ways to market items and get you to buy them. The solution is to shop from a list. If you go into a store with an objective, you are less likely to make that unplanned purchase.
5. Be aggressive in your approach. For example, if you realize you are overspending and incurring credit card debit, then switch to cash. If you pay for everything in cash, it is impossible to spend more than you have.
Controlling spending can be challenging but also very rewarding once you succeed. Hard work in this area can usually yield impressive results. You have to believe in yourself and your ability to challenge yourself and hopefully you can get that spending under control.
